At the end of this week, Oregon-based singer-songwriters Haley Heynderickx and Max García Conover will release their second collaborative album, What Of Our Nature. The pair shared writing duties for the project, trading off songs from opposite corners of the country (Conover was based in Maine at the time) while taking inspiration from Woody Guthrie as they explored ideas about colonialism and what it means to be American.
When they announced the project, the duo shared two songs. Today they’re offering two more. The Heynderickx-penned “to each their dot” gives the album its title as she sings, “What of our nature have we done forgot?” Conover’s Oberstian “This Morning I Am Born Again” pulls lyrics from Guthrie’s archive as it meditates on solidarity and collective care.
Hear both songs below, set to paintings by Heynderickx.
What Of Our Nature is out 11/21 on Fat Possum.
