‘Mother Mary’ Features Anne Hathaway, Charli XCX Music: Watch

Hey, you want to see Anne Hathaway singing a song that Charli XCX wrote specifically for her? Sure you do! That is absolutely something you want to see! I’m pretty sure that’s what happens in the trailer for Mother Mary, the forthcoming A24-produced pop-star thriller from director David Lowery. (This is the David Lowery who made The Green Knight and The Old Man & The Gun, not the David Lowery from Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven.)

Charli XCX is deep in her cinematic bag right now. She’s got a number of acting performances in new movies, including her own A24 starring vehicle The Moment. Also, Charli’s apparent Brat follow-up is the entire album of tracks that she recorded for Emerald Fennell’s upcoming Wuthering Heights adaptation. (We’ve posted the John Cale collab “House” and the incredibly sick and dramatic “Chains Of Love.”) On top of all that, Charli also “wrote and produced songs” for the new David Lowery film Mother Mary, and she just tweeted about it. That film was first announced in 2023, and its trailer arrived today.

Mother Mary appears to follow the unsettling and possibly supernatural relationship between two long-estranged friends — a pop star, played by Anne Hathaway, and a fashion designer, played by Micaela Coel from I May Destroy You. The cast also includes FKA twigs, who’s in one shot of the trailer, and Hunter Schafer from Euphoria. The preview is light on story details and heavy on creepy atmosphere, and the scenes of Hathaway in performance are awesome. In those bits, we catch glimpses of Hathaway singing what sure sounds like a new Charli XCX song, and I’m going to buy a ticket on the promise of that spectacle alone.

The Mother Mary poster and trailer both mention that the movie features original music by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA twigs. That’s quite a trio! Up until this moment, Charli had semi-public beef with both twigs and one very prominent Antonoff collaborator. People online are already suggesting that this list of names suggests a burial of hatchets, or perhaps a strategic realignment, though it’s probably just that they recorded these songs a few years ago. Check out the trailer below.

Mother Mary arrives in theaters next spring.
