Last year, bass-booming producer Channel Tres released his debut album Head Rush. Now, he’s ready for a new era, teasing a phase earlier this week. Today, we finally get a preview of this new era with the single “Free Your Mind.” You might be wondering, does this new song nod to En Vogue’s song of the same name? And yes, kind listener, it does. In fact, it’s a full-on reimagined cover.
The bass is bouncing. The world opens up. Channel Tres’ satiny vocals are like fast-acting benzos, pushing any worries to the back of the mind. Despite the suave tone “Free Your Mind” has a bigger agenda: Don’t be a racist, prejudice asshole. “Before you can read me/ You’ve got to learn how to read me,” he sings before the chorus hits. It brings the sentiment “don’t judge a book by its cover,” but also free yourself of small-minded and offensive thinking, to the club.
