For a long time now, Toronto artist Katie Stelmanis has been recording swirling, pulsing, dramatic music under the name Austra. She’s really good at it. Austra’s last album HiRUDiN, came out in the dark days of 2020, but she comes back on Friday with her new LP Chin Up Buttercup. She already shared the singles “Math Equation” and “Siren Song,” and now she’s got one more track before the LP drops.
I tend to think of Austra’s music as being dank and gothic, but that doesn’t really apply to her new song “Fallen Cloud.” Instead, it’s joyous, optimistic drunk-in-love dancefloor revelry. Stelmanis’ breathy but operatic vocals still have atmospheric weight, but her delivery doesn’t clash with this track’s thumping beat and its catchy little synth riffs. Check it out below.
