The sonically masterful trio Psychonaut have just released their third record, World Maker, this past Friday (24th of October). The forthcoming album comes after the band’s impressive debut with Unfold The God Man in 2020 and their follow-up LP, Violate Consensus Reality in 2022, all a smorgasbord of complex technicalities and polyrhythms that can both soothe and excite simultaneously.
With shoegaze elements tucked between structures of progressive post-metal, accentuated with pieces of psychedelic rock, Psychonaut‘s newest venture is sonically both an intense and refrained experience that pushes and pulls like a tide. In 10 tracks, vocalist and guitarist Stefan de Graef, vocalist and bassist Thomas Michiels, and drummer Harm Peters, construct a narrative about the “childlike wonder that we often lose somewhere along the line as we grow into adults,” de Graef explains of the new record.
Inspired by the arrival of his first son as well as profound loss occurring in his life, de Graef had a new lens for the record, focusing more complex narratives and diving deep within himself to reflect on who he was as a person and the world his partner was bringing their son into. Ultimately, de Graef constructed a story love for his son in case something were to ever happen to him.
