BILLY GOULD On FAITH NO MORE’s We Care A Lot: “This Might Be The One That Matters The Most”

Faith No More‘s debut album We Care A Lot turned 40 on November 30, and bassist Billy Gould took some time to reflect on it. In a social media post, Gould called the record possibly “the one that matters the most” and the one that really launched Faith No More‘s career.

“Once the music is recorded and it let out into the world, everything becomes subjective: is it better, is it worse, is this the band at its most intuitive or most naive?” wrote Gould. “On a techical level, this one is far from our best work. But in terms of spirit, it’s right up there. A highly willful gang of presumptuous kids, not quite understanding who they were, but yet, clearly feeling where they need to go.

“The band was unknown, so there were no outside expectations. But plenty of freedom and drive, and though we did argue a lot, we were united in the project on a core level..we spent money that we didn’t really have to create a vibe, and when it was finished, we looked at ourselves differently. So to me, this might be the one that matters the most, and set the stage for what was to follow.”

Former Faith No More guitarist and current Mr. Bungle member Trey Spruance added in the comments: “I’ve made no secret that this is my favorite FNM album. Still feel that way. It captures the élan of the band in its vital essence.”

We Care A Lot was also one of the two records by Faith No More to feature founding vocalist Chuck Mosley, who died in 2017. As for Faith No More in the modern day, I wouldn’t expect a reunion anytime soon.

Faith No More and Mr. Bungle originally canceled their September and October 2021 tour dates as vocalist Mike Patton dealt with ongoing mental health issues. Those cancellations bled into 2022, with Faith No More canning their plans for the entire year.

Mr. Bungle would eventually get back on stage quite a few times, but Faith No More never recovered. Patton would later address the situation with Faith No More‘s other members, while Faith No More keyboardist Roddy Bottom briefly addressed the band’s situation as a “semi permanent hiatus”, bassist Billy Gould said he has no idea what’s going on, and drummer Mike Bordin had zero faith. Bottum also reiterated in a recent interview that it’s pretty unlikely the band is getting back together.
