One nice thing that’ll hopefully come from the new Stereogum redesign is that I’ll now have more time to dig through my Bandcamp notifications and post some of the new underground music that we might not have had time to spotlight last week. For instance: You should hear this new Cemento song. This shit is cool.
In 2019, members of LA hardcore punk bands Smut and Smirk got together to form a gothy new death-rock project called Cemento. Cemento released their full-length debut Killing Life in 2021, and they’ll follow it with a new LP called Bad Dream Songs just before the end of the year. I never heard that first album, and I don’t know much about Smut or Smirk, but Bad Dream Songs opener “Better Days” goes extremely hard. It’s a smoky, intense goth-rock attack about living in perpetual boredom and depression. Check out that song and the new LP’s tracklist below.
