In December 2025, a Facebook post (archived) claimed 80-year-old actor and singer Bette Midler declared on live TV that she invested $68 million in Netflix “to rip apart the fog that has hidden the truth for far too long.” According to the post, Midler’s announcement came on the night of Dec. 2, 2025, during which she also referenced an unsettling 15-minute clip supposedly released by Netflix. “Within moments, the internet exploded,” the post claimed.
The full text of the post was as follows:
BETTE MIDLER “ERUPTS” LIVE ON AIR, DECLARING A $68 MILLION INVESTMENT IN NETFLIX TO TEAR THROUGH THE FOG OF TRUTH—AND AMERICA TREMBLES
On the night of December 2, a stage long familiar with dazzling lights suddenly became the epicenter of a media earthquake. Bette Midler — the Broadway legend and irreplaceable icon of Hollywood — appeared with an intensity no one had seen before. She placed both hands on the desk, her gaze cutting straight into the lens, and delivered a line that made the world freeze:
“I will invest 68 million dollars into Netflix. It’s time to rip apart the fog that has hidden the truth for far too long.”
No laughter.
No applause.
Only shock filling the room like thick smoke.
Immediately after her declaration, Midler referenced a 15-minute clip recently released by Netflix — a piece framed as fiction but unsettlingly real in tone. Blurred faces, cryptic details, and an atmosphere so heavy it sent chills through the entire film industry. Midler insisted the clip was not entertainment, not a stunt, but a warning about secrets long buried beneath the weight of power.
She made it clear that the $68 million wasn’t a moment of emotional impulse. It was a commitment — to expand investigations, collaborate with experts, and produce a documentary series powerful enough to “drag the truth back from the dark.”
Within minutes, the internet exploded.
#Midler68Million, #TruthOnNetflix, #ExposeThePowerful shot straight to global trending lists.
In the entertainment world, chaos spread instantly: studios called emergency meetings, publicists slammed comment sections shut, and once-untouchable names fell into sudden silence.
Midler closed the broadcast with a single sentence that sent shivers across millions:
“If the truth makes the powerful tremble… then it’s time they tremble.”
And on that night of December 2, Bette Midler stepped out of the spotlight of entertainment — and into a battle to expose the truth
The rumor was further spread by other Facebook posts (archived). People began searching Google and the Snopes website for information on the rumor.
The story described in the post was entirely fabricated. There was no evidence any of it occurred even though the post claimed the moment went viral on the internet.
Snopes looked for information on the story through Google searches of “bette midler 68 million,” “bette midler netflix” and “bette midler netflix 68 million,” narrowing each search to the few days before and after Midler supposedly declared her investment. Snopes could not find any results related to the apparent announcement, except for the handful of posts sharing the exact same story word-for-word, through the searches. Considering the “internet exploded” over the story, it’s incredibly unlikely that a Google search would yield no news reporting, blog posts or social media chatter on the subject.
Additionally, Midler did not post about a Netflix investment on her Instagram account, YouTube channel or website.
Snopes also searched for the referenced 15-minute Netflix clip. Since the story did not name the clip, Snopes attempted to find it on Netflix’s website through a search of Bette Midler. The 15-minute clip did not appear in that search, nor could Snopes find it on Netflix’s X account.
The page behind the Facebook post linked to a blog post with more details in the comments section of the post, a tactic commonly used by pages that share made-up, likely artificial intelligence- (AI) generated stories of celebrities doing dramatic or heartwarming things. And while that blog post did expand upon a couple of missing details from the Facebook post, it still kept the story vague enough to limit what identifying details were available to try and confirm the authenticity of the story.
For example, the blog said Midler’s announcement came “under the glaring studio lights of a prime-time talk show.” However, it did not name which prime-time talk show Midler apparently appeared on and did not name the host of the show, whom the story claimed was “visibly flustered.”
The Facebook post itself was reminiscent in content and structure to other fabricated stories about celebrities and/or politicians that Snopes has fact-checked over the past couple of months. The posts often claim that the subject delivered some kind of earth-shattering statement that silenced the people around them. The moment, the posts have often claimed, became a social media sensation. Usually the posts end with punchy statements meant to underscore the significance of whatever was described.
The post about Midler was billed as a celebration of someone working to expose the truth. But in reality the post just reveled in its own lie.
