Matt Zane has shared a new statement from Jay’e Jones, the former roommate of Tera Wray Static, defending his controversial plan to release an unauthorized documentary about the late Static-X frontman Wayne Static and his wife.
Zane has faced mounting opposition from the families and estates of both Wayne Static and Tera Wray, who have publicly objected to the project and recently issued a cease-and-desist letter demanding he halt production.
Despite that legal pressure, Zane has vowed to continue, launching a crowdfunding campaign for the documentary and maintaining that the project reflects the wishes of Wayne and Tera themselves.
On December 18, Zane shared a statement from Jay’e Jones, who says she lived with Tera Wray after Wayne Static‘s death and spent significant time with the couple during the final years of their lives. Jones said she felt compelled to speak publicly to honor what she describes as their expressed wishes.
“During the last years of Wayne and Tera‘s lives, I spent a great deal of time with them,” Jones wrote. “In numerous conversations, they expressed how excited they were about creating a documentary about their lives together, with their close friend Matt Zane… They chose HIM.”
According to Jones, the documentary was not a casual idea, but something discussed repeatedly and with enthusiasm. She further claimed that after Wayne‘s death, Tera became even more committed to the project, saving music and personal recordings with the intention they would be used in the film.
“When she moved in with me, she made sure I knew exactly where those materials were and who was supposed to tell their story,” Jones said, adding that she later felt the responsibility acutely following Tera‘s suicide in January 2016.
Jones stated that after Tera‘s death, Wayne Static‘s parents contacted her and asked for all materials that belonged to Wayne, which she says she turned over immediately. She also says she informed them of Wayne and Tera‘s documentary plans with Zane: “After that, it was completely out of my hands,” she wrote.
Jones said she later agreed to participate in what she believed was the original documentary concept, only to learn that Zane was no longer involved and that the project’s direction had changed.
“It was shocking for me to learn that Matt was no longer involved… and that their story was being reshaped without him,” she wrote. “Matt‘s new documentary is the only project that reflects their original intention.”
She concluded by asking the public to remain open-minded: “This isn’t about choosing sides. It’s about respecting Wayne and Tera‘s wishes.”
The families and estates of Wayne Static and Tera Wray recently issued a joint public statement rejecting Zane‘s documentary outright, calling it an “exploitation of this dark and tragic chapter” in their lives.
They have objected to the use of any unauthorized footage, images, likenesses, or music, and warned that such use would be met with legal action. The families also emphasized that an official Static-X documentary, Evil Disco – The Rise, Fall, And Regeneration Of Static-X, is currently nearing completion.
The statement further challenges Zane to turn over any unreleased recordings he claims include Wayne Static‘s voice, explicitly rejecting the use of AI-generated recreations. Zane has stated that the cease-and-desist letter will not deter him.
“This won’t stop me,” Zane said. “If it ends up in court, so be it. This movie will be made and released if it’s the last thing that I do.”
Zane has argued that other unauthorized Static-related documentaries exist online without legal consequences and questioned why his project alone has drawn legal scrutiny. He has also claimed that some footage was filmed while Wayne and Tera were still alive and that the couple explicitly asked him to tell their story.
Wayne Static died on November 1, 2014, from multiple prescription drug toxicity involving oxycodone, hydromorphone, Xanax, and alcohol. Tera Wray died by suicide on January 13, 2016, at her home in Joshua Tree, CA.
