Dallas-born, LA-based musician Liv.e has only gotten more prolific over the years. She released her debut album Couldn’t Wait To Tell You… in 2020, which was then followed by 2023’s Girl In The Half Pearl and last year’s PAST FUTUR.e. Today, she’s returned with a completely new project, teaming up with renowned Detroit drummer and producer Karriem Riggins as new duo GENA. The name is short for “God Energy, Naturally Amazing” and somewhat inspired by Tisha Campbell’s character Gina from the ’90s sitcom Martin. They shared their debut single “Circlesz” with a retro talk show video directed by Mackai Sharp.
“Circlesz” is a smooth, buoyant piece of music that could easily find itself on repeat. The rhythm section —a playfully bobbing bass and limber drum hits—is sturdy but aerodynamic. There’s some added glass-like trickles and charming organ embellishments. Liv.e’s shapeshifting vocals squat and pivot into all the right pockets. It’s a lovely little time in just under two and a half minutes.
