Hardcore Greats Big Boy Release Triumphant New EP Love Songs

Swagged-out San Jose head-knockers Big Boy still haven’t made an album, but that didn’t stop them from becoming hardcore festival conquerors. (As we just found out, they’re high up on the bill at next year’s LDB Fest.) Big Boy — not to be confused with Big Boi, or with the Big Boys for that matter — share members with big-deal groups like Sunami and Hands Of God. They’ve got a physical, crowd-pleasing style and a gift for groovy riffage, and they really knocked it out of the park with their new EP Love Songs.

Up until now, Big Boy’s entire recorded output has been promo tapes in 2019, 2021, and 2023. Love Songs is the first Big Boy record with a title. I wasn’t expecting a new Big Boy release today, and it looks like it might’ve been mistakenly released a day early, but whatever! It’s out now, and it destroys.

You only have to devote 11 minutes of your life to Love Songs. It’s just four songs and an intro, and three of those songs are hard-crunching, primal pit anthems. That stuff is awesome, and it’s fully in line with what I expect from Big Boy. But they take a big left turn on closing track “Other Side Of The River.” My guy is singing on that one. It made me think of the Afghan Whigs for some reason. Check out the Love Songs EP below.

The Love Songs EP is out now on DAZE.
