New Tomb Raider Game Details Leak And It Looks Like A Reboot

It appears that details about the return of Lara Croft have leaked ahead of tonight’s reported reveal at The Game Awards. Earlier this week, various Tomb Raider-related social media accounts sent out hints that the lady of Croft Manor was preparing to embark upon her latest expedition, while clues about a new game in the 30-year series also showed up on a Fortnite island dedicated to the TGA event. Now, various accounts have let slip what could be the name, cover art, and some extremely blurry footage of the game in motion. And it seems to suggest a remake of the very first Tomb Raider.

As spotted by Eurogamer, a couple of different accounts have uploaded what purports to be sneaky images of the unannounced game, including that it’s name will be Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. The alleged box art does strongly sniff of AI to me, being a little too smooth, and while after closer inspection there are the right number of fingers, they sure look a bit of a mess holding those guns. So I’m saying, large pinch of salt for this particular aspect. (Of course, at this point we also can’t be sure that a studio wouldn’t shit out some AI art themselves.)

The in-game shots, however, seem a lot more realistic, mostly based on their atrociously poor quality. It appears they are stills from this leaked video, which to my eye looks like shitty mobile phone footage taken from a distant screen, perhaps at a TGA rehearsal.

If that cog shot is real, the X user above could well be right about this being a remake of the original 1996 game, and that would make a lot of sense given the series reaches its 30th birthday in 2026, when a new game would be most likely to be released. (Lara’s the same age as Pokémon! I hope they have a joint birthday party!) It would also make some sense of the Atlantis-themed title, given that first game was about Lara’s adventures surrounding the Scion of Atlantis. Oh, and there’s the small matter of a T-rex appearing at the end of the footage!

Of course, the game couldn’t simply be called Tomb Raider, like the original, because they already blew that chance in 2013 when publishers went through that weird phase of abandoning numbered titles and rebooting series. “Tomb Raider: Scion Of Atlantis” would have made a fair amount of sense, but “scion” is both obscure (it means descendant) and hard to spell.

We shall learn the truth later today at The Geoff Awards.
