Hypixel Studios will announce the newly revived Hytale‘s early access release date next week—but ahead of that announcement, the studio announced that the standard version of the game will cost $19.99. Two special editions, which will include different cosmetics like capes and hats, will be priced at $34.99 and $69.99.
Simon Collins-Laflamme, who founded Hypixel Studios in 2018, said on X that the price is “as aggressively low as possible,” something he said was “a considerable personal risk” now that he’s repurchased the game and hired 50 people to work on it. Collins-Laflamme said he wants “as many players as possible” to play Hytale; the current economy is hard, and he wants anyone interested to be able to access the game. People who want to—and can—support development at higher tiers can do so at the Supporter and Cupbreaker levels.
“I said I was all in, and I am delivering on that promise,” he wrote. “The game is unfinished and runs on a build from over four years ago. Charging more didn’t feel right. I don’t think the game is good yet. My team and I will push hard to make it good, then great. The vision is clear and progress is fast.”
Hypixel announced Monday that it had acquired the rights to the Minecraft-esque survival game after League of Legends developer Riot Games canceled Hytale in June. The terms of the deal haven’t been shared, except that the studio is fully independent and already working on a revised version of the game.
“This game has always been close to my heart, and I’m excited to bring it back home,” Collins-Laflamme said on X after the announcement. “Real talk: Hytale isn’t some polished AAA release waiting in the wings. It’s messy. It’s janky. And there’s a lot of work to be done. My plan? Get it out to you as soon as possible. No more waiting. You’ll get to play it, rough edges and all. It won’t be perfect on day one. My hope is that together, we’ll shape it into something truly special.”
By Wednesday, the Hypixel team had already released a 16-minute gameplay trailer. Naturally, it looks a lot like Minecraft—but with more combat. That makes sense, because Hytale grew out of a Minecraft server called Hypixel. Riot Games supported the studio at its inception in 2018, but acquired it outright in 2020. The game was originally expected to be playable in 2021.
