Slothrust typically make lightly grungy and melodic alt-rock, as evidenced by the pair of original singles they’ve shared so far this year. But Slothrust also have a knack for some good, unexpected covers of older songs: They released a whole EP of them way back in 2017, and then in 2023 they put out a rendition of Ginuwine’s “Pony” that’s much better than you might expect. But now, ’tis the season for Christmas music, and so Slothrust are acting appropriately by covering “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch.”
Slothrust hail from Boston, so they know a thing or two about creatures in snowy climates. Their “Mr. Grinch” cover is pretty faithful to the version Thurl Ravenscroft covered decades ago for the original How The Grinch Stole Christmas, just with a fair amount of fuzzy guitars layered on top. It’s not a rotter, Mr. Grinch; it’s a rocker. Listen for yourself below.
