St. Vincent Covers David Bowie’s “Young Americans” On ‘Colbert’

Two years ago, St. Vincent covered David Bowie’s 1975 classic “Young Americans” at the Love Rocks NYC benefit. But if you wanted to enjoy her version of the song, you had to settle for cell-phone footage from fans. That is no longer the case. Last night. Annie Clark brought her version of “Young Americans” to Stephen Colbert’s Late Show.

St. Vincent doesn’t have any new product to push. Instead, she was on TV to participate in what Stephen Colbert calls “The Late Show‘s critically described series Under The Covers.” In a quick pre-performance interview, Annie Clark named the three artists whose St. Vincent covers she’d love to hear: Erykah Badu, Doechii, and the Slits. Slits frontwoman Ari Up passed away in 2010, so I don’t see that one happening, but I like the ambition.

Once again, St. Vincent brought real swagger to her “Young Americans” cover, dressing as an old-timey stewardess and busting out some classic rock-star tricks. Below, check out her performance and the Bowie original.
