If you’re on the hunt for a new mattress, you’ve probably come across Leesa in your search. The brand was one of the first to offer a “bed-in-a-box” when it was founded in 2015, and has remained a popular choice for the past decade. While you can find Leesa products in specialty mattress stores nationwide, there’s no doubt that buying online is easier — as long as you get advice from a trusted source about which one to buy.
That’s why we added a visit to Leesa to our Personal Shopper series, where we go to our favorite brands’ storefronts and test their products in person. For this trip, one of our editors got up close and personal with three of Leesa’s most popular mattresses, including cooling, hybrid, and foam options for every type of sleeper.
Leesa has been selling mattresses online since 2015, when it launched its Original foam mattress (more on that below). It has since expanded to hybrid models as well as foam, and now has eight mattress collections to shop from (including one for kids). Plus, it sells a variety of pillows and other bedding categories so you can easily outfit your whole bedroom. And, unlike many mattress brands, Leesa focuses on its social impact and has donated over 40,000 mattresses to various nonprofits over the past decade.
In 2017, Leesa began a partnership with West Elm and Pottery Barn, so you can buy Leesa mattresses at the same places you buy your favorite furniture and home goods. Leesa and West Elm even collaborated on a latex mattress called the Natural Hybrid, which is designed with eco-friendly materials. In terms of customer service, Leesa offers a 100-night trial period and a limited lifetime warranty on all of its mattresses.
We judged every Leesa mattress based on the following criteria:
Why You Should Trust Me as a Tester
Each mattress in this article was tested by style editor Emma Dangel. Emma started out on the marketing & brand partnerships team at Apartment Therapy in 2022, and transitioned over the editorial team in 2025. She mainly covers decor news, style guides, and shopping tips, and has also worked on Apartment Therapy’s Small/Cool NYC event and the New/Next List.
To write about these mattresses, Emma traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, to check out Leesa’s mattresses in person. She was able to touch, lie on, and closely examine all of the brand’s offerings, plus got to see exactly what’s in each mattress.
Our Favorite Editor-Tested Mattresses at Leesa
Emma’s thoughts: Leesa’s Original mattress has a classic memory foam construction with noticeable sinking and contouring. I’m a fan of hybrid mattresses, but I’m not a fan of this option’s sink-in feel, which doesn’t seem to offer much support. Still, I think people who prefer all-foam mattresses will find a lot to love about this model — especially couples who need good motion isolation (you can barely feel it when the other person moves around on this mattress!).
While Leesa says this mattress has a medium feel, I thought it felt more like medium-firm, and I noticed minimal bouncing due to the lack of coils. While all-foam mattresses aren’t as cooling as hybrid or latex models, the Original does come with some nice features for temperature regulation, including a top foam layer that’s designed to promote airflow and a breathable knit cover. If you’re willing to spend a little more, you can also opt for a quilted cooling top that performs double duty as a cooling and plush top layer.
All-foam mattresses like this one are great for apartment-dwellers, as they’re pretty lightweight, which was something I noticed while testing. While I still prefer my hybrid mattress, I think this is a fantastic foam option — especially considering the affordable price.
Emma’s thoughts: The Sapira Chill offers the type of excellent support and responsiveness that people with back and hip pain will appreciate. It comes with a quilted pillow top that adds a nice layer of comfort, plus a zoned coil system that adds extra support and pressure relief exactly where it’s most needed.
One of the best things about this mattress is the customizable feel. Unlike what you would find with most mattresses, the Sapira Chill comes in three firmness levels so you can get the exact feel you want. I tested the medium-firm option, which I felt leaned slightly more firm — although I loved the pillow top for added contouring.
This mattress is advertised as cooling, which I couldn’t accurately test since I wasn’t able to sleep on it. I did notice that the cover didn’t feel as cool-to-the-touch as others I tried, but that doesn’t mean it’s not effective at dissipating heat over time while you sleep. I did like the good edge support and bouncy feel, and overall I think this is the most responsive mattress I’ve tested.
Emma’s thoughts: The Legend Chill is easily my favorite Leesa, and one of the best mattresses I’ve tested — period. It checks all the boxes: cooling, supportive, and comfortable, with excellent contouring that feels super luxurious to lie down on. It has a perfect medium firmness to it, plus a thick quilted cover that offers the ideal amount of sink while still keeping the spine aligned. It feels like a dream!
I do wish that the Legend Chill had options for different firmness levels, though, especially because the less expensive Sapira Chill comes with three choices. That wasn’t an issue for me, as the feel was just right for my preferences, but I can see someone looking for an ultra-plush or firm mattress ending up disappointed.
One of the biggest selling points of the Legend Chill is the cooling cover, which felt more immediately cool to the touch than the Sapira Chill’s. This mattress also has a quilted gel foam layer that’s more breathable than regular foam, as well as has two layers of coils: one layer of micro-springs to help with motion isolation, and one layer of zoned support for targeted pressure relief. While the edge support could be better, the overall comfort and breathability make it a standout option.
