This week’s new heavy metal releases include live prog with a choir, live prog with an orchestra, crushing death metal, and more! To the metals…
ALSO! Today, Bandcamp is doing one of their days of giving 100% of what you pay directly to the labels and artists. So if you can get stuff from Bandcamp, please do.
Blood Red Throne – Siltskin
Genre: Death metal
Origin: Kristiansand, Norway
Label: Soulseller
Buy now on Bandcamp
Getting this week started with a kick to the head. This is no frills death metal with all the classic moves. Looking for divebombs in solos? Check. Melodic shredding breaks? M’yes’m. Grooves to snap your neck to? Oh yeah.
Brass Against – Brass Against VI
Genre: Brass metal cover
Origin: New York, New York
Label: Self-released
Buy now here
Brass Against have their whole thing pretty well established now with classic rock and metal songs backed by a horn section. At the time of writing this, I couldn’t find an official tracklisting, but I’d imagine you’re getting all or most of the covers they dropped since their last record. Those include Ozzy‘s “No More Tears,” Faith No More‘s “Epic,” White Stripes “Icky Thump,” and more.
Fucked Up – Year of the Goat
Genre: Experimental hardcore
Origin: Toronto, Ontario
Label: Tankcrimes
Buy now on Bandcamp
Fucked Up are a band with a deep well of material. Within that well is their soon to be concluded Zodiac series. The Year Of The Goat album is the first of the ten-part conclusion that’ll occur over the next year. It’s two nearly half-hour tracks that traverse just about every genre they’ve dabbled in. It’s dense and amazing. The official street date for the physical and streaming stuff is next week, but you can hear it all on Bandcamp now.
Persefone – Live In Andorra
Genre: Progressive metal
Origin: Andorra la Vella, Andorra
Label: Napalm
Buy now on Bandcamp
Persefone went all out for their first live album. It was recorded with the Orquestra Nacional Clàssica d’Andorra and covers much of their career up until then. For some this live album will be their first time hearing classic Persefone material with new-ish vocalist Daniel R. Flys, and it’s a hell of an introduction.
TesseracT – Radar
Genre: Progressive metal/djent
Origin: Milton Keynes, England
Label: Kscope
Buy now on Amazon
Unlike Persefone, this is not TesseracT‘s first live album. However, they too went all out this time. They’re accompanies by Choir Noir who add extra heft to Daniel Tompkins’ already epic vocals. This album leans heavy on their War Of Being album, but those songs lend themselves best to this epic treatment.
Upon A Burning Body – Blood Of The Bull
Genre: Metalcore/deathcore
Origin: San Antonio, Texas
Label: Self-released
Buy now on Amazon
Upon A Burning Body‘s seventh album is their first to be self-released and is all the chunky deathcore you’d hope for from them. The juxtaposition of melody and mayhem feels especially jarring (in a good way) this time. The record feels like you’re getting gored by the bull on the cover.
