Karnivool is set to release their long-awaited new record In Verses on February 6, and this new single “Opal” is a pretty major callback to the earlier days of their career. I mean literally – Karnivool guitarist Drew Goddard said some of the ideas date back to Karnivool’s 2005 debut album Themata.
“The riff in the middle and end was actually the first thing I recorded in the Themata era, on a computer at my parents’ house. Twenty years later, it found its place here,” said Goddard. “Jon dug it up, and we made it feel more current. The verse that starts with ‘You’ve been holding up…’ was a section left off ‘Aeons’ from Asymmetry. The whole track came together in a way we’ve never really experienced before — these old, separate ideas suddenly just fell into place.”
Working with longtime producer and collaborator Forrester Savell, Karnivool began to see the final form of In Verses become clearer in 2024, with the band entering the album’s tracking phase in early 2025.
“There were literally years where we didn’t work on the record,” said Karnivool vocalist Ian Kenny. “There were big gaps, and then really focused periods of time that allowed us to chew into what we had been trying for on this record.”
