Timothée Chalamet Won’t Say Whether He’s Really EsDeeKid

There’s this UK rapper named EsDeeKid, right? White kid from Liverpool. Always wears a mask. Thick accent. Raps over the glitchy, twitchy UK underground beats that are currently picking up all kinds of buzz online. EsDeeKid hasn’t been making music for a long time, but he makes a lot of it. In his videos, he’s usually all in shadow. He’s keeping things mysterious on purpose, and the internet is having a lot of fun with the idea that he’s really Timothée Chalamet. Chalamet himself can neither confirm nor deny.

Now: Timothée Chalamet is not EsDeeKid. Sorry. I know everyone is playing along with it and I’m just pissing on the parade here. Nobody actually believes that these two guys are the same person. They’re just having fun with their friends online. Writers at big press outlets are riffing on the story, but it’s not an actual story. Timothée Chalamet is a very busy movie star who does not have the time to launch an entire secret identity as a mysterious Scouse rapper. It just doesn’t make sense. The timelines don’t match up.

But Chalamet is happy to play along, especially as EsDeeKid becomes a big name in the UK. EsDeeKid released his debut album Rebel earlier this year, and his song “Century” recently became his first top-10 UK hit. “LV Sandals,” his track with fakemink and Rico Ace, is one of my favorites of the year. Next year, he’ll play the London version of Outbreak Fest. On the poster, he’s below Deftones, IDLES, and Amyl And the Sniffers but above JPEGMAFIA, Basement, and Deafheaven. He’s going places.

Right now, Timothée Chalamet is out doing press for his new movie Marty Supreme. In a recent UK radio interview, the giggling hosts asked if he’s really EsDeeKid, and Chalamet said, “I got no comment on that. I got two words on that.” Then he paused for an uncomfortably long period of time and eventually said, “All will be revealed in due time. That was a little more than two words.”

This is not how most movie stars would answer that question, but most movie stars were not knighted by Lil B. That’s exactly how Lil B would answer that question.

Below, watch some EsDeeKid videos and see if you can see any resemblance.
