File sizes of video games have gotten out of control in the last decade. As the industry chases higher and higher fidelity, rendering every last bead of sweat on their in-game characters, games have been ballooning in size. Just look to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 set to release next month. The latest FP cash cow from Activision is also a file size cow, coming in at over 200GB. The fact is, if you want to be able to play more than a small handful of these games, you’re going to need a lot of storage space. Amazon happens to have the WD_Black SN850X internal gaming SSD on sale at the moment. Right now, you can save 22% on the 1TB model (bringing the price from $115 to just $90) or you can save 17% on the 2TB model (bringing the price from $190 to just $158) for a limited time. You’ll end up saving between $25 and $32.
If you want an even bigger buttload of storage available at your fingertips, Western Digital does make models containing 4TB and 8TB. These though are not currently on sale, with the 4TB option going for $280 and the 8TB option going for $640.
PlayStation 5 Compatible
Consoles are also struggling to keep up with the increasing files sizes of AAA titles releasing each year. Look at the launch model of the PlayStation 5. It comes with just 1TB of internal storage, though technically, much of that space is already dedicated to the system software that let’s the PS5 be a PS5. Really, you’re only working with just over 800GB of workable space to save your games to. Well, you can expand your storage by hooking up a WD_Black SSD inside your console. It’s easy to install as there are countless YouTube videos to follow along to. However, you’ll want to grab the “with heatsink” option on Amazon. This is a tiny metal casing that allows heat to dissipate across while playing games. Sony recommends using one when expanding your consoles storage.
Amazon also happens to have the SSDs with a heatsink available at a discount. Typically the 1TB WD_Black SN850X with a heatsink goes for $130, but right now it’s $10 off at just $120. Likewise the 2TB option is down $20 from $200 to just $180. The 4TB and 8TB options aren’t discounted either. They go for $320 and $640 respectively. You can also consider picking up a third party heatsink for less to use with the WD_Black SN850X SSDs that come without.
