What we know about rumor Bill and Hillary Clinton refused to sit for Epstein depositions

In mid-November 2025, social media users spread a claim that former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, his wife, had refused to appear for depositions in the House Oversight Committee’s investigation of the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case. Epstein, a financier and sex offender who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges, had ties to numerous prominent figures, including the Clintons.

The rumor circulated on Facebook and Threads.

The Clintons did not immediately return a request to confirm or deny the allegation. Thus, we have not rated this claim.

There was no evidence the Clintons had outright “refused” to sit for depositions. In August, the House Oversight Committee subpoenaed the Clintons and scheduled their depositions for Oct. 9 and 12. The depositions did not occur, but the government also closed on Oct. 1 and did not reopen until Nov. 12 due to funding disputes between the two parties. The House Oversight Committee did not meet during October.

However, House Oversight Republicans have alleged that the Clintons are needlessly delaying their deposition dates.

“The House Oversight Committee continues to act in good faith, yet attorneys for Bill and Hillary Clinton continue to play games and have not agreed to the proposed deposition dates,” a House Oversight Republicans spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “Meanwhile, Committee Democrats have shown little willingness to assist the majority in finalizing a schedule for the Clintons’ depositions.”

House Democrats blamed the postponement of depositions on the government shutdown, according to the Miami Herald.

House Oversight Democrats did not immediately return a request to verify the Herald’s reporting and provide any updated information.

The Clintons’ subpoenas — see pages 13 and 25 of this PDF from the House Oversight Committee — detailed their family’s purportedly close relationship with Epstein.

For example, the subpoenas pointed to a picture of Bill Clinton receiving a massage from one of Epstein’s victims — an image Snopes verified as legitimate in 2024. Snopes frequently fact-checks Epstein-related rumors; for more on Epstein, see our collection of stories.
