Why the Amex Platinum Card is perfect for fitness lovers

The American Express Platinum Card® is one of our top picks for a premium travel rewards card. The card has a steep $895 annual fee (see rates and fees) but offers many benefits, including lifestyle-focused statement credits.

Among these are several that appeal to fitness lovers. The card was recently refreshed, adding even more perks for the active cardmember.

Whether you occasionally work out, like fitness classes or are an avid runner, the Platinum Card can offer you value. Not every fitness lover will use every benefit, but most can find value in at least a few of them.

Here are six reasons why this card is great for fitness enthusiasts.

Work out with Equinox and SoulCycle

Equinox is a popular luxury fitness club with over 100 locations worldwide.

Platinum Card members receive up to $300 in Equinox credits per calendar year to use on Equinox gym and Equinox+ app memberships (subject to auto-renewal; enrollment required).

If you live in a sizable U.S. city with a physical Equinox location, you can apply this credit toward membership. Monthly club memberships range from $205 to $395. With this credit, you’ll likely cover one month, depending on the membership you choose.

If you don’t live in a city with an Equinox, the credit can fully cover an annual digital Equinox+ membership. Equinox+ offers on-demand workouts such as HIIT, running and yoga — ideal for those who prefer flexibility.

For those who prefer working out from home, the SoulCycle benefit helps bring the boutique fitness experience to you. Cardmembers receive up to a $300 statement credit per calendar year toward the purchase of a SoulCycle at-home bike*. A SoulCycle bike costs $2,500 (plus taxes), so think of this credit as a $300 discount.

*This statement credit applies to up to 15 bikes per calendar year, and enrollment is required. To qualify, you must have an active Equinox+ membership and make the purchase in a single transaction.

Fit out with Lululemon

TPG staffers love Lululemon for its quality and style. For me, the brand’s clothing makes up about half of my wardrobe. It sells activewear, footwear and accessories, but everything tends to be on the pricey side.

Luckily, Platinum Card members receive up to $75 in quarterly statement credit at U.S. stores (excluding outlets) and online (enrollment required).

DANYAL AHMED/THE POINTS GUY

Some of my top picks under $75 are the Pace Breaker shorts for men and the Align leggings for women.

Check out the We Made Too Much overstock section for discounted items to stretch your credit even further. Even if you don’t use this statement credit on yourself, you could purchase an item as a gift for your fitness-loving friends and family.

Additionally, if you’re shopping online at Lululemon, be sure to click through Rakuten to earn bonus cash back or American Express Membership Rewards points.

Track your metrics with an Oura Ring

Oura Ring is a health and fitness tracking wearable ring. Think of it as a sleeker version of an Apple Watch or FitBit.

As an added bonus, unlike most other wearables, the Oura Ring doesn’t need as frequent charging, making it a convenient choice for health-conscious people.

Some of the most common metrics the Oura Ring tracks are your calories burned, heart rate and steps taken.

With the Platinum Card, you’ll receive an annual up to $200 Oura statement credit on hardware purchases (enrollment required). Unfortunately, the credit doesn’t apply to the $5.99 monthly or $69.99 annual subscription, which you’ll need to get the most out of your ring.

The latest Oura Ring starts at $349 (plus taxes), so the credit would cover more than 50% of the cost. If you already have an Oura Ring or wearable, consider gifting a ring to a workout partner.

Stream music and videos with YouTube

YouTube Premium lets you watch any video ad-free and in the background on your phone, plus it offers millions of fitness and workout videos from top creators. It’s a great way to discover new routines and training plans.

If you have a Platinum Card, you can use up to $25 in monthly digital entertainment credits to cover eligible streaming services, including YouTube Premium (enrollment required).

Your YouTube Premium subscription also includes YouTube Music, which lets you stream and download songs for offline listening. If Apple Music or Spotify doesn’t appeal to you, it’s a solid alternative with the same ad-free convenience.

Get groceries delivered with Walmart+

Walmart+ is a service designed for convenience, offering benefits such as free grocery delivery and fast online shipping. It’s useful for those looking to spend less time shopping and more time focusing on fitness or recovery.

Cardmembers receive an up to $12.95 monthly Walmart+ membership statement credit (subject to auto-renewal; Plus-Ups excluded; enrollment required).

While not directly fitness-related, Walmart+ can still support your wellness routine. You can have groceries delivered to prep healthy postgym meals, saving time on shopping. And on days when you’re too tired to cook after working out (which happens to me often), you can order prepared meals from Walmart, have them delivered and simply heat them up.

Order food and rides to the gym with Uber

Uber can make postworkout recovery or gym commutes easier, whether you’re grabbing a healthy meal or catching a ride to your next fitness class. With Uber One, you’ll also enjoy perks like delivery at no additional cost and reduced service fees on Uber Eats orders. Even with delivery, I often find restaurants near the gym and order pickup instead to save on fees.

Cardmembers receive up to $200 in Uber Cash each year ($15 monthly, plus a $20 bonus in December), as well as up to $120 in annual Uber One statement credits that fully cover a $9.99 monthly or $96 annual membership (enrollment required for select benefits).

Together, these benefits can make healthy living more convenient. You can use your monthly Uber Cash for quick grocery runs, protein-packed takeout or rides to fitness studios — all while saving on delivery and service fees through Uber One.

Bottom line

Whether you’re into Pilates, plyometrics or powerlifting, the Platinum Card is built to power an active lifestyle. And its value extends well beyond fitness, offering year-round rewards through statement credits, premium travel perks and robust shopping protections.

In short, it’s a card that rewards motion, both in the gym and on the go.
