Your Personal Style Isn’t a Puzzle to Solve – It’s a Painting You Keep Creating — Inside Out Style

Too often, we treat style like a simple puzzle, something that, if we could just find the right missing piece, would finally be “done.” That perfect dress, the right pair of shoes, the ultimate capsule wardrobe.

Have you tried buying that “must-have garment” suggested by an influencer or fashion magazine to discover that it wasn’t the magical ingredient you were missing?  That’s because personal style doesn’t work like that.

Your style is not a problem to solve.
It’s a painting,
one you add to over time.

And just like an artwork, it doesn’t need to be finished to be beautiful.

Perfection Is the Enemy of Expression

Many intelligent and capable women fall into the “style puzzle” mindset. You might think: If I just figure out my body shape, or my colour palette, or my signature look, then I’ll have it all sorted.

And while understanding your colouring, proportions, and personality is incredibly empowering (and something I teach deeply in my 7 Steps to Style program), it’s not the end of the journey.

It’s the beginning of intentional creation.

Because true personal style isn’t a formula, it’s a reflection of your inner self, your lifestyle, your values, and yes, your current season of life.

Style is Alive, Let it Breathe

Think of your wardrobe like a canvas. Some days you paint with bold brushstrokes. Other days, with quiet neutrals. You might change your medium – structured tailoring one week, soft flowing layers the next. And that’s not inconsistency – it’s creativity.

Instead of asking, “Have I solved my style?”

Ask, “What am I expressing today?”

Let that be your guide.

It’s Time to Play in Your Wardrobe

Rather than wearing the same garments in the same outfits over and over, why not shop your wardrobe and try different options.  There is no right way or one outfit that’s the most stylish or the only way to dress.  Instead try different colour combinations and accessories to change up your look and express yourself in a different way.

Keep Creating (Not Completing)

Here’s how to shift from “puzzle” thinking to “painting” flow:

  • Let go of the finish line. Style is never “done,” and that’s a good thing.
  • Document your evolution. Take photos, create mood boards, and notice what lights you up over time.
  • Allow for change. Your style will evolve as your body, life, and values evolve. That’s not failure, that’s growth.
  • Make space for play. Try new combinations, break your own rules, and add a brushstroke you’ve never tried before.

If you’re ready to step into a more creative, confident version of your style, start with my Evolve Your Style program – a 31-day style challenge that helps you build playful daily habits and paint your own style masterpiece.

Because your wardrobe isn’t a test to pass,
it’s your gallery,
and every outfit is a brushstroke of who you are.
